Inge Pataki was born in Germany and came to Fredericton as a practising visual artist in 1970 when her husband, James, a classical musician, joined the Brunswick String Quartet at the University of New Brunswick. Gallery 78 was established by Inge and James in 1976 to showcase and nurture the enormous artistic talent in New Brunswick. Inge has been an integral part of the fabric of Fredericton and New Brunswick in her dedication to the promotion of the visual arts. With her excellent taste, vision and hard work, Gallery 78 became known as an artistic jewel in Eastern Canada. With foresight and tenacity, Inge and James came to own the historic Crocket House, which has become a tourism icon, known for its welcoming spirit and exquisite beauty both inside and out. This tenacity is also showcased in the mere fact that Gallery 78 has been able to not only survive, but flourish in uncertain economic times and in a small geographic region.
